I test drove two 2004 C5 Corvettes this afternoon. First time that I have driven a C5 since 1997, and it matched my memory.

Kinja'd!!!

One was a Z06 and I really liked it a lot. Of course, it only had 16,500 miles on it, so it had been probably treated gently. It was priced high from a dealer, and I’m more likely to buy privately and with high miles.

File this under “What my wife doesn’t know won’t upset her, yet.”

Do it. I’ve never driven a C5 but they say its a huge improvement over the C4 and I love mine. The C5 looks just aren’t for me.

Not going to lie most of my CL searches lately have been C5s. The performance bargain is hard to beat, and the aftermarket support is good too

Is it just me or is the steering a bit slow? I think the Z06 might have been a bit better than the coupe, but it was a bit more than 180 degrees to turn a street corner, which bugged me.

Also, any big maintenance issues?

I never noticed the steering being slow. Most people that complained about steering said it was under pressured.

In 170 Mike’s I had a list of maintenance issues that included the following that went wrong:

1) the thermostat

That was it, other than your standards wear items like brakes, tires and a clutch that my dad burned out. Wonderful cars.

Follow my user name to my kinja blog, I have a long story about my Z06.

I have to say that the reliability and ease of repair are big reasons why I’m considering a Vette over a used Porsche or BMW. But mostly it is the V8.

That car is so easy to work on. Some things are time consuming, like the 8 hour clutch swap, but nothing is difficult.

OK, I found this , which made me wonder why you got rid of the Z06, if all others pale in comparison.

Then I found your post on the Z06 ownership , and see that it came down to feeling that with a growing family and an HOA, you couldn’t hold on to it. Too bad I wasn’t ready to have this conversation at that time.

Yeah. Kids, man....

God I miss that car. I probably would have been buried in it if I hadn’t been suckered  convinced to get married and have kids. I love the kids more than I loved the car, though, so there’s that.
